Exam Preparation
The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal course is for experienced sailors aiming to validate their skills through a formal examination. It prepares participants to skipper yachts on shorter coastal passages, handle varying weather conditions, and manage a crew effectively.
The course culminates in an exam with an independent RYA examiner, assessing navigation, seamanship, and boat handling.

Course Content

Coastal Navigation and Pilotage
Master chart work, tidal streams, and pilotage in challenging conditions using advanced navigation systems. -
Coastal Passage Planning
Plan passages considering weather, tides, and safe havens. -
Boat Handling
Refine yacht handling under power and sail, including man-overboard recovery and anchoring. -
Night Sailing and Navigation
Skipper confidently at night, identifying lights and buoys. -
Leadership and Crew Management
Enhance leadership skills for managing a crew during demanding passages. -
Safety and Emergency Procedures
Focus on advanced drills like man-overboard recovery and emergency steering.
Duration
10 days of training, followed by a 1-2 day Yachtmaster Coastal exam with an independent examiner.
Pre-course experience

30 days at sea (2 as skipper), 800 nautical miles, 12 night hours.

Coastal navigation and meteorology knowledge recommended.

First Aid Certificate and VHF Radio License required.

Seatime requirements reduced for Coastal Skipper course holders.
Minimum age
18 years old.
