Our mile builder courses offer the chance to explore the stunning Atlantic coastline, from Gibraltar up to the shores of Portugal.

 

Designed for sailors looking to gain offshore experience and build sea miles, these passages take in a variety of destinations, with the furthest being Lagos in Portugal. Other possible stops include the vibrant towns of Vilamoura and Seville, allowing for a truly diverse sailing adventure.

  • Barbate, Spain
    A quiet coastal town with long sandy beaches and a well-protected marina. It’s a perfect place to rest before making the longer passages further up the coast.

  • Cadiz, Spain
    One of Europe’s oldest cities, Cadiz is rich in history and culture. Its marina offers easy access to the city’s iconic architecture, lively plazas, and delicious Andalusian cuisine.

  • Rota, Spain
    A relaxed town known for its friendly marina and excellent local food. It’s a convenient stop for provisioning and a short break before heading further north.

  • Chipiona, Spain
    Famous for its lighthouse and beach promenade, Chipiona offers a picturesque setting and a calm marina for an overnight stay.

  • Mazagón, Spain
    A quiet coastal town with access to the Doñana National Park. The marina provides good shelter and is perfect for a peaceful overnight stop.

Who is the Course For?

Ideal for sailors working towards RYA Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster qualifications or those wanting to refine skippering skills on extended voyages. It’s also suited for those seeking offshore cruising experience in a safe, structured environment.

Course Content

  • Passage Planning and Navigation
    Plan longer passages, factoring in weather, tides, and navigational hazards.

  • Boat Handling
    Practice sail trim, reefing, and handling in varied conditions.

  • Night Sailing and Watch Keeping
    Participate in night passages, learn pilotage under limited visibility, and manage fatigue.

  • Seamanship and Safety
    Improve man-overboard recovery, emergency procedures, and heavy weather sailing skills.

  • Experience in Varied Sailing Conditions
    Sail across diverse coastal and offshore environments, including the Strait of Gibraltar and the Atlantic coast.

Duration

12-14 days, covering several hundred nautical miles, including both day and night sailing.

Pre-course experience

Basic navigation and sailing skills required. RYA Competent Crew or equivalent recommended; experience as a skipper or watch leader is beneficial.
