The RYA Competent Crew course is for beginners or those with limited sailing experience, transforming participants into active crew members.

Over five days, you’ll practice sailing techniques, safety protocols, and onboard life while cruising in coastal waters around Gibraltar, Spain, and Morocco.

Ideal for novices or those wanting hands-on experience to become confident, essential crew members. Perfect as a starting point or for brushing up on skills.

Course Content

Basic sailing techniques
Hoist and trim sails, steer the yacht, and grasp navigation and wind awareness.
Deck work
Handle ropes, tie knots, operate winches, and secure the yacht.
Safety onboard
Personal safety, lifejacket use, man-overboard drills, and emergency equipment.
Living aboard a yacht
Daily routines, watch duties, hygiene, and tidiness.
Anchoring and Mooring
Secure the yacht at anchor or dock.
Helming and crew duties
Take part in all responsibilities, including helming under the skipper’s guidance.

Duration

5 days (flexible options available, such as weekends or split sessions).

Pre-course experience

No prior experience required.

Minimum age

12 years old.

Instruction by an RYA-qualified instructor.
