Yachtmaster Coastal Preparation

The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Preparation course is for sailors working toward the Yachtmaster Coastal exam, building the skippering, navigation and pilotage skills needed to take a yacht up to 20 miles from a safe haven, by day or night. This practical course covers boat handling, pilotage and passage planning, preparing you directly for your Yachtmaster Coastal exam.

Who Is This Course For?

Ideal for those with solid sea time behind them, looking to consolidate their skills before sitting the Yachtmaster Coastal exam. Suited to those with 800 miles logged (or 400 with an RYA Coastal Skipper Practical completion certificate), comfortable skippering in a yacht in coastal waters, day or night.

Course Content

Boat Handling

Berthing practice, boat handling under sail and power, and confined-space manoeuvring.

Passage Planning

Planning a coastal passage incorporating a tidal gate, using charts and other resources under exam conditions.

Pilotage

Day and night pilotage into unfamiliar harbours and anchorages.

Navigation and Electronic Aids

Position fixing using radar, AIS and chart plotters, alongside traditional chartwork.

Collision Avoidance

Applying the IRPCS and collision-avoidance strategy in real-time scenarios.

Safety and Seamanship

Emergency procedures, safety drills, and yacht systems management.

Course Syllabus

Pre-Course Experience

30 days at sea and 800 miles logged within the last 10 years (reduced to 400 miles with an RYA Coastal Skipper Practical completion certificate), including 2 days as skipper and 12 night hours, with at least half of all sea time in tidal waters. A valid First Aid certificate and SRC (VHF) radio certificate are also required.
