Yachtmaster Offshore Preparation

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Preparation course is for experienced sailors working toward the Yachtmaster Offshore exam, sharpening the skippering, navigation and passage planning skills needed to take a yacht up to 150 miles from a safe haven, by day or night, in a wide range of conditions. This intensive course isn’t about learning new skills – it’s about refining and perfecting the ones you should already have, preparing you directly for your Yachtmaster Offshore exam.

Who Is This Course For?

Ideal for experienced sailors with a wide breadth of sea time behind them, looking to consolidate that experience before sitting the Yachtmaster Offshore exam. Suited to those with 2,500 miles logged, comfortable managing a crew, setting watches, and handling a yacht in unfamiliar waters, day or night.

Course Content

Skippering and Boat Handling

Advanced berthing practice, boat handling under sail and power, and confined-space manoeuvring.

Passage Planning

Planning a 60-mile passage incorporating a tidal gate, using charts and other resources under exam conditions.

Pilotage

Day and night pilotage into unfamiliar harbours and anchorages.

Navigation and Electronic Aids

Position fixing using radar, AIS and chart plotters, alongside traditional chartwork.

Collision Avoidance

Applying IRPCS and collision-avoidance strategy in real-time scenarios.

Crew Management

Setting watches, delegating responsibility, and managing a crew over an extended passage.

Course Syllabus

Pre-Course Experience

50 days at sea and 2,500 miles logged within the last 10 years, including 5 passages over 60 miles (2 as skipper, 2 overnight), at least 5 days’ experience as skipper, and at least half of all sea time in tidal waters. A valid First Aid certificate and SRC (VHF) radio certificate are also required. RYA Yachtmaster Theory (or equivalent knowledge) is also required.
